The Mission

Building recognition for banned books across Bay Area libraries.

The project exists to help libraries in San Mateo and the Bay Area promote Banned Books Week, install thoughtful displays, host informed discussion, and invite presentations that deepen understanding of challenged literature.

Encouraging informed discussion

Challenged books are often reduced to quick summaries or controversy alone. This initiative encourages libraries and readers to slow down, examine the actual texts, and discuss them with historical, literary, and educational context.

Helping readers understand why books are challenged

Readers encounter challenges for many different reasons, from depictions of violence or sexuality to language, politics, identity, or religion. Our goal is to explain those reasons clearly so communities can respond with knowledge instead of assumption.

Promoting Banned Books Week and local participation

The project encourages libraries to mark Banned Books Week with programs, reading lists, presentations, and display cases that introduce patrons to challenged books in a thoughtful and accessible way.

Providing context, displays, and presentations

Rather than accepting censorship as a default answer, the project provides context and practical support: sample display ideas, public-facing resources, and presentations for libraries that want to learn more and increase recognition one library at a time.
